Supporting Breathwork Through Additional Wellbeing Concepts

Although breathwork can create positive, fundamental shifts in health, it does not, and cannot, exist in a silo or vacuum.

That’s why we need to incorporate ideas from different areas that all play a part in health and wellbeing. The Breath Lab is centred around functional breathing patterns, but will draw on the following pillars:

  • Breathe

  • Sleep

  • Eat

  • Move

  • Connect

Pulling in elements from these five pillars enables you to make small adjustments that contribute to an overall improvement in the way you feel. Some people might not need to look at anything other than their breathing, but often we find that diet, exercise and posture will speed up progress.

When you move more, you sleep better, your stress levels fall, you create more CO2, and your baseline breathing shifts. When you eat better, you sleep better, you have energy to move and connect with others and all of these benefit your mental health. It’s all part of a web of wellbeing.

Your sessions aren’t designed to be a deep dive into any of the pillars other than breathwork. However, we can pull in ideas from the other wellbeing pillars to support your journey to a functional breathing pattern and reduction of symptoms. Things that we might touch on under each pillar include:

  • Sleep - proper sleep hygiene, how much sleep is right for you, improving quantity and quality of sleep.

  • Eat - the importance of balanced nutrition and eating whole foods more regularly - no radical diets or skipping meals - as well as fluid intake.

  • Move - moving regularly throughout the day is key for maintaining our physical and mental health and aiding normal breathing patterns.

  • Connect - we all need to take time out from our screens, be it to spend time with friends and family, join a group or team, or carve out a daily window for yoga, meditation or simply some time in nature.
